About the Journal
Description
Middle Atlantic Archaeology is the peer-reviewed journal of the Middle Atlantic Archaeological Conference (MAAC), founded in 2026 as the successor to the Journal of Middle Atlantic Archaeology (1985–2025). MAAC publishes the journal, and William & Mary Libraries hosts it using Open Journal Systems. Middle Atlantic Archaeology publishes annually, and the first volume will appear in 2027.
Focus and Scope
The journal publishes peer-reviewed research articles and editorially reviewed field and laboratory reports on the archaeology of the Middle Atlantic region, broadly construed. It welcomes work on precontact, historical, and contemporary archaeology, as well as material culture, landscapes and places, heritage and preservation, archaeological science, and public and collaborative archaeology where these contribute to archaeological understanding. The journal welcomes submissions from researchers working across academic, CRM, government, museum, community, and avocational settings. All published content is clearly designated by review type.
Peer Review
Research articles undergo single-anonymous peer review: reviewer identities are kept confidential, but reviewers know author identities. Field and laboratory reports receive editorial review by the Editor.
Open Access Policy
Middle Atlantic Archaeology follows a delayed open access model. Current issues are available to MAAC members for three months following publication, supporting the organization's membership while ensuring broad public access to regional research. After this period, all content becomes freely accessible to the public. Authors pay no article processing charges or publication fees.
Image Policy
Middle Atlantic Archaeology will not publish photographs of human remains or associated funerary objects. Line drawings are permitted as an alternative. Manuscripts depicting human remains or associated funerary objects in any form must be submitted with written documentation of consultation. For Indigenous ancestors, this means consultation with relevant federally, state-, or Canadian-recognized tribal nations; consultation with other groups does not replace consultation with recognized tribal governments. For other human remains, authors should document consultation with descendant communities. Authors should initiate consultation early in manuscript development. Without documentation of consultation, the Editor will not proceed with review.
History
Middle Atlantic Archaeology was founded in 2026 by the Middle Atlantic Archaeological Conference, continuing the 41-volume legacy of the Journal of Middle Atlantic Archaeology, which Roger Moeller founded and edited from 1985 to 2025. The first volume of Middle Atlantic Archaeology will appear in 2027 and will be dedicated to Roger Moeller's four decades of service to MAAC and Middle Atlantic archaeology.
